Discover a secret foodies retreat in the Algarve!

Normally I go for more adventurous topics but I honestly couldn’t resist an invitation to have a pre-Christmas lunch in Boliqueime at “Casa do Mondo”!

Watch the video VLOG above!

Casa do Mondo – House of the World

Casa do Mondo was set up by Harriet and Mondo in late 2018. In a nutshell, they bought a beautiful rustic properties in the hills above Albufeira and set about transforming it into an artful hideaway. Now it is used for cooking retreats, painting holidays, writing getaways and they have some great events.

Chat to the owners

I’ll even ask Harriet to come on to our closed Facebook group (I’ll let you in too if you ask nicely 🙂 ) and tell us more about what’s in store for visitors to Casa do Mondo in 2019.

We kicked off with some chestnuts and peppers – what a great mix!

The best thing about visiting Casa do Mondo were the people. Harriet, Mondo, John the Chef and Helen were all amazingly open and warm and we had a crazy fun time. The food was magnificent too!

Learning to cook

John whirs around in a blur while the ladies learn the secrets of Portuguese cooking.

The main reason we were there was to learn how to cook. John the Chef roped us into making “Pastéis de Bacalhau” which are traditional Portuguese Fish cakes.

Yvette Martins (@thesunnyalgarve on Instagram) from Ola Local and travel writer, Rowena made light work of preparing these goodies before they were thrust into boiling oil for cooking. The resultant golden balls made their way to the table and into our mouths. Delicious!

Mince Pies, pudding flan (or creme caramel). Yum!

The Algarve Culinary Travel scene

The Algarve’s tourism board has invested a fair amount into this particular part of tourism and you will see a lot of similar projects like Harriet and Mondo’s beautifully rustic corner of the Algarve.

The region also recently won a European award for gastronomy and scooped an Italian award for cooking vacations. It’s good to see our beautiful place in the sun getting recognized!

Have you ever thought about learning to cook (and eating it of course!) as a holiday?

Come on, say something. We'd love to hear it!
