History of Albufeira, Algarve

Albufeira’s history traces back over 2,000 years to Roman times, and it has always been a strategic coastal settlement. Originally called “Baltum” by the Romans, it was later renamed “Al-Buhera” under Moorish rule, a name that roughly translates to “castle by the sea.” This influence is still evident in the whitewashed buildings and winding streets in the Old Town.

Throughout the centuries, Albufeira was a quiet fishing village until the 1960s, when tourism started to transform its character and economy. The beaches and warm climate attracted international attention, drawing visitors and development to the area. This tourism boom brought new hotels, resorts, and restaurants, turning Albufeira into one of Portugal’s most popular vacation destinations. Nowadays, Albufeira is often known as a lively party destination, particularly during the peak season. While, The Strip, with its abundance of bars and neon lights, may not suit everyone’s tastes, other parts of the town retain their traditional charm. The town’s vibrant atmosphere ensures it remains a fun and entertaining place to explore.
